Vipassana 3.0

My third meditation/silence retreat

It's laughable!

I actually only truly understood the technique on the second-to-last day of my third 10-day Vipassana course.

I had been practising my own technique – a completely different one.

My technique is also good for exploring one's own soul. However, I got stuck in the painful areas and developed an attachment to resolving them. Paradoxically, this was precisely what prevented the release from happening. I couldn't let go of control, and therefore the healing process was blocked.

Because the crux – the key to the correct technique – is to let nature itself do the work. You do this by observing, but then also releasing your attention and moving on. This prevents you from becoming attached to any particular sensation.

Because – at least this is what I believe I have understood correctly – attachment and aversion create suffering because they block the natural flow.

Unfortunately, I have now created new "Sankharas" with my own mind. Goenka warns about this in his discourses.

So, let me explain the correct technique clearly and precisely:

During the body scan, from head to toe, you observe bodily sensations.

The point is to truly observe whatever is there! This is very important. Initially, you proceed step by step, part by part.

You observe while remaining completely at peace with what you experience. In other words, you ACCEPT whatever is there and remain equanimous towards it. You develop neither aversion towards what you perceive NOR attachment to it.

As soon as you can observe a sensation with equanimity, you immediately move on to the next area and repeat the same process.

When "Sankharas" (old conditioning, addictions, patterns) arise, you observe and accept them with equanimity as well, but you don't follow them or get caught up in them. Instead, you guide your attention to the next area and observe the sensations there.

That's all! So simple, and yet so difficult, because the mind wants to linger on the "interesting" sensations.

I tricked myself because I thought it was good to feel the pain (since I hadn't allowed myself to feel it for a long time in my life). But I became addicted to digging deeper and deeper into it...

Of course, digging deep and getting to know yourself is valuable. Nevertheless, training and mastering the mind also means directing it towards the "uninteresting" parts of the body and allowing nature to do its work.

This is „purification“.
